Samsung Unveils New 990 SSD with Faster Performance and Improved Power Efficiency

Samsung Electronics has introduced the new Samsung 990 SSD, a PCIe 4.0 NVMe solid-state drive designed for gamers, content creators and PC users seeking faster storage performance alongside improved energy efficiency.

Available in 1TB and 2TB capacities, the Samsung 990 SSD offers sequential read speeds of up to 7,250MB/s and write speeds of up to 6,450MB/s, enabling faster boot times, reduced game loading and quicker file transfers for demanding workloads.

According to Samsung, the 2TB model delivers random read and write speeds of up to 850,000 IOPS and 1.2 million IOPS, while the 1TB variant achieves up to 700,000 IOPS for random reads and 1.1 million IOPS for random writes. The company says these improvements provide a more responsive experience for multitasking, gaming and creative applications.

The latest drive also brings notable gains in power efficiency. Samsung claims the 990 SSD is up to 38% more power efficient than the previous 990 PRO, allowing users to achieve high performance while reducing overall power consumption. The improvement is expected to benefit both desktop and laptop users looking to maximise efficiency without compromising speed.

Designed for modern storage demands, the 2TB model offers sufficient capacity for large creative projects and extensive gaming libraries. Samsung estimates it can store up to 30 AAA titles, based on an average game size of 64GB, making it suitable for users managing increasingly larger files and applications.

To complement the hardware, the Samsung 990 SSD is supported by Samsung Magician Software, which provides drive health monitoring, firmware updates, performance optimisation and secure data migration tools to help users maintain long-term SSD performance.

“The Samsung 990 SSD is designed to deliver a balance of performance, capacity and efficiency for users ranging from everyday PC owners to gamers, content creators and DIY PC builders,” said Tommy (Hyoungsuk) Kwon, Vice President of Memory Brand Product Biz Team at Samsung Electronics.

The Samsung 990 SSD will be available in Malaysia from end-July 2026. The 1TB model carries a recommended retail price of RM1,069, while the 2TB version is priced at RM2,111.
